One Life {2} – Simeulue: A Hidden Gem in Indonesia

Published on mars 20th, 2025 | by Paddleworld

Off the coast of Sumatra, the island of Simeulue remains untouched by mass tourism, offering a glimpse into a simpler way of life. Here, scooters and cows reign supreme, navigating the jungle paths that lead to pristine waves. This deeply traditional island attracts only a handful of surfers searching for uncrowded breaks and a truly immersive cultural experience—where even SUP surfing is a welcomed curiosity.

Traveling along the west coast from south to north, the team discovered beautiful, lesser-known waves, accessible either from the winding coastal road or by boat. Local fishermen, always eager to connect, were happy to guide them to hidden surf spots while watching them ride the waves. Every interaction was an intense cultural exchange, as few locals speak English. To bridge the gap, the team brushed up on their Indonesian before the trip, practicing it daily to communicate. These language exchanges—blending basic Indonesian with simple English—often led to laughter and shared moments.

On Simeulue, people take the time to connect. Conversations revolve around family, daily life, and shared experiences. After a surf session, whether on the boat or the beach, someone is always there offering a fresh coconut and asking about the waves. With surfing as the only real « tourist » activity, the passion for the ocean becomes the common thread uniting visitors and locals.

Some residents captured photos of the surfers, just as the team took pictures of them—a mutual exchange of memories. The island remains authentic and welcoming, with its fishing ports, a modest commercial hub, and a small airport keeping it connected yet unspoiled.

Simeulue is like a rare and distant diamond, maintaining its traditions while subtly embracing modernity. Locals invest in smartphones, flat screens, and scooters to stay connected to the outside world, yet the streets still reflect a life of simplicity in harmony with nature. As if modern times have had little impact on their deep-rooted culture and traditions.

A huge thank you to @dylanresort and @ahmetdadali for the incredible hospitality and good vibes!
