In January 2024, a group of UK paddlers ventured to Morocco for 10 kayak surf mission. Settling in the quaint town of Sidi Ifni, just a short journey south from Agadir airport, where the Atlantic swell of North Africa awaited. Josh Dias-Smith, Sam Clegg, Pretam Gurung, Jools Gardiner met with Joe Rea Dickens and Callum Strong and set up base in the mesmerising Hotel Suerte Loca, where you wake up in the morning and get a direct view of the waves while enjoying a Moroccan omelette. Facing a clean point break, where the saying ‘It is always bigger than it looks’ definitely comes into play! Navigating nerves and using rip currents to reach the backline. Towering sets, reaching 8-12 feet on the first day of was slightly bigger than anticipated. Catching one was no problem, you could surf the steep glass of the Atlantic all the way into the beach if pleased but find yourself on the inside and you’ll want to be prepared for a bit of fight club in there! After a long days of surfing, they explored the quiet town of Sidi Ifni, immersing themselves in the local cuisine and delicacies. A small seafood restaurant within the fish market became their favourite spot, where they feasted on squid and shrimp cooked to perfection. Ready for the next day of turns.
« Earlier this year Palm Grom Jools Gardner joined two of the Palm mentors, Sam Clegg and Joe Rea-Dickins for his first ever surf trip. For over a week the Atlantic threw out waves on waves, allowing this young freestyler to go from zero to hero on the surf in no time. We’re stoked to see how much Jools learned on this trip and, as always, can’t wait to see what’s next. »
